Seeing Red January 9, 2010

Mary Whitehouse would find herself out of a job in this day and age.  It seems more and more people are pushing that big red ‘complaint’ button when it comes to anything remotely controversial on British television.  Last month it was an innocent remark on the Marks & Spencer Christmas advert, and this month it’s Doctor Who.

The problem?  When Matt Smith appeared as the newly regenerated Doctor, he looked at his new head of hair and commented “Still not ginger.”  The result? 143 review complaints to the BBC.

Ginger-ism has been a hot topic in the news recently.  Tesco received complaints for selling a Christmas card picturing a ginger-haired child on Father Christmas’s knee with the words: ‘SANTA loves all kids. Even GINGER ones’, and eventually removed the product.

But according to the Beeb, this latest incident has been a horrible misunderstanding.  Far from persecuting red-heads, the Doctor was showing disappointment, referring to the 2005 ‘Christmas Invasion’ episode where previous Doctor David Tenant expressed sadness at not being one of the fiery-headed few.  You could also point out that the Doctor’s previous and current companions are both red-heads themselves.

Prejudice against any colour or creed should not be tolerated.  But please dear viewers, calm down, and think before you hit that submit button on the complaint’s page.
