The Golden Globes are over.  The frocks have been snapped and studied, the host damned, and the winners celebrated…   But now comes an award ceremony closer to home.  Yes, it’s time for the BAFTAs!

Three films dominate the nominations list, with eight mentions apiece – Avatar, The Hurt Locker and An Education.  District 9 hasn’t done too shabby either, racking up seven nominations, followed by Up In The Air and Inglorious Basterds with six.

The best actor category pits Jeff Bridges (Crazy Heart), George Clooney (Up In The Air), Colin Firth (A Single Man), Jeremy Renner (The Hurt Locker) and Andy Serkis (Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll) together.  While the women’s group includes Carey Mulligan (An Education), Saoirse Ronan (The Lovely Bones), Gabourey Sidibe (Precious), Meryl Streep (Julie & Julia) and Audrey Tautou (Coco Before Chanel.)

We’re not surprised to see Avatar up there – it’s done big numbers, especially in the States.  But just because it has the lead with nominations, doesn’t guarantee it any awards on the night.  We’ll just have to wait and see, when the winners are announced on the 21st February.
