When seven year old Charlie Simpson, from London, decided to raise a bit of cash for the Haiti quake relief effort, he had little idea just how successful he’d prove to be.

Charlie, aiming to complete a sponsored five mile cycle around his local park, posted his fundraising appeal on the JustGiving website.  He hoped he would raise around £500.  However, people were so touched by his determination to help out, he ended up raising a whopping £96,000.

David Bull, Unicef’s UK executive director, described Charlie’s act of kindness as a “little seed” which had rapidly grown into something much bigger.

“This is a very bold and innovative gesture by Charlie that shows he connects with and not only understands what children his own age must be going through in Haiti, but is also wise enough to know that he can help them,” he said.

“The little seed – his idea – that he has planted has grown rapidly and his is a place well-deserved in the humanitarian world.

“On behalf of the many children in Haiti, I thank Charlie for his effort.”

Aww!

The fundraising total is still climbing, so if you want to show Charlie some support, you can do so by donating via his JustGiving page here.

[EDIT: One hour after posting, the little guy just broke £100,000!  Go Charlie!]
