How To Fall 35,000 Feet – And Survive February 8, 2010

Franklin D. Roosevelt once said “the only thing to fear is fear itself.”  Clearly, he’d never fallen out of a plane flying at 35,000 feet.

Many travellers can feel a little nervous when ascending into the skies, but thankfully those concerns are very rarely justified.  Air travel is one of the safest ways to get around.

But what if, by terrible chance, all your nightmares come true?  The aeroplane malfunctions.  You are thrown from the craft.  And suddenly you find yourself plummeting through the air!

Well, popularmechanics.com is on hand to offer some advice – but you’d better read it quickly though, as generally a fall of 35,000 feet gives you three minutes before impact.

Among the advice is what to expect during your descent (an initial blackout due to lack of oxygen), how to prepare (grab some fuselage or make like a starfish), and the best position (never head first) and location (a swamp, but not the sea!) for your landing.  Oh, and also to clench your bum cheeks if descending into water – think about it.

It’s utterly terrifying stuff, but utterly fascinating at the same time!  We hope we never have to put it into practice.
