In a survey of more than 1,000 Londoners to mark the 10th anniversary of the Haven service for rape victims, three quarters of female respondents said that a victim who got into bed with the assailant before an attack should accept responsibility.  Not only that, but one-third of respondents blamed victims who had dressed provocatively or gone back to the attacker’s house for a drink.  And out of all of the respondents, it was the women who were less forgiving of the victim than men.

Elizabeth Harrison from Haven said there was never an excuse for forcing a woman to do something she did not want to.

“Clearly, women are in a position where they need to take responsibility for themselves – but whatever you wear and whatever you do does not give somebody else the right to rape you.”

You can find more information on the survey here.

BWT can’t help but feel saddened and disappointed by this news.  But what do you think?  Are you surprised by the results of this survey?  Why do you think women are harsher critics than men?
