Women Are Messed Up March 22, 2010

Recently there’s been a lot of publicity about fashion designers and magazine editors using “plus sized” (or in the real world, “normal sized”) women on their catwalks and pages.  Plus there was the high profile Dove campaign (pictured, above) a handful of years back.  Call it a step forward or simply a gimmick, but few would deny that a greater diversity of body shape is a good thing.

But according to a new study by the University of Arizona, it doesn’t actually make women feel any better about themselves.

The research discovered that larger women feel better when ads don’t include any models at all.

Average-sized ladies have lower self-esteem after looking at ads with plus-sized models rather than skinny ones.

And thin folk prefer the traditional tiny models.

The study did, however, come up with one rather rubbish way bigger models can be used to  influence product sales:

“If a normal-size woman sees moderately heavy images in ads for weight-loss products, she might feel overweight and be more inclined to buy a diet plan or gym membership.”

Basically, use plus-sized models to make women feel bad enough about themselves that they spend more money on gym memberships and diet products.

Ladies, we are one big mental MESS!

Ladies, grabbing a bargain doesn’t give you the excuse to act like an animal.

A shame some particular ladies in France didn’t pay attention, as they went on a stampede during the opening of a H&M store in Toulouse.  Once the store opened chaos ensued as everyone tried to get their hands on anything they could find that was made by Sonia Rykiel.

Check out one staff member running for her life as soon as the shutters came up!

Yippie!  Get Cutie, one of our favourite clothing retailers, has completely revamped and redesigned its website.

The Get Cutie shop, based in Brighton, is well worth the trip if you are in the area.  But if you aren’t, navigating their website can be a pain in the neck – until now.

Gone are the teeny tiny swatches that gave you an unclear picture of what their (beautiful) patterns really looked like.  It’s now super clear and easy to see exactly what you’re getting.  Plus, they’ve added a whole bunch of new fabrics – we’re rather taken with the “Head in the Clouds” print (below.)

And if you have a little person if your life (a child – not Danny DeVito), you can soon deck them out in Get Cutie gear too!  MATCHING RED RIDING HOOD SKIRTS FTW!

We at BWT love 50’s vintage, and Vivien of Holloway make the perfect replica 50’s dresses without the “vintage smell” or cigarette burn hole on the bum.

This week from Thursday to Sunday (28th – 31st January) they will be having a sale event with many things at half price, which means that you cab buy two!

The only snag is, the sale is restricted to their London store only, and not online.   Sorry folks!  But if you are in the London area or fancy an outing, you could do a lot worse than popping down to their store on Holloway Road.  To check out their stock and more information about the sale, please click here.
