BWT loves tea, oh yes.

One of our favourite tea shops has been quietly growing and spreading its little tea leaves all over London.  Yum!

We like Yumchaa because it has far too many teas to choose from, delicious cakes, and guides us away from the “other” more “corporate” coffee shops who shall not be named.  We also like the decor because we’re shallow like that.

You’ll probably find us sniffing the sample cups.  Mmm, Midnight Grey please!

For those outside the haven of tea and cakes, you can find them online here.

This spiralling structure has just been unveiled as the monument to mark the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Named the ArcelorMittal Orbit (certainly rolls off the tongue, doesn’t it?), the design was created by Turner Prize-winning artist Anish Kapoor, and will be 22m higher than New York’s Statue of Liberty.

The structure also has a second purpose – to keep people coming to east London (where the Olympics are being held) long after the Games have finished.

”Long after the Games are over, our aim is to have a stunning spectacle in east London that will be recognised around the world,” said London Mayor Boris Johnson.

It will cost £19.1m to build.

What do you think, BWT readers?  Do you like the design?  We’re a bit on the fence…

Company That Tried to ‘de-gay’ Pub Fined For Discrimination February 25, 2010

The Colherne Arms pub, based in Earl’s Court, London, had a loyal following of locals, including those from the gay community.  But when the pub changed hands, the new owners decided they wanted a different kind of clientelle – and actively discriminated against their staff and even their customers, simply for being gay.

A tribunal found that gay staff members and customers were referred to as “queens” as the management tried to “de-gay” the pub after it changed management and its name to the Pembroke Arms in 2008.

Former assistant manager Mr Charles Lisboa, 41, said he was told to reprimand a gay couple for their behaviour, and was even asked to put a sign outside that said: “This is not a gay pub.”

The pub’s owner, Realpubs, said it was trying to attract patrons from a wider section of the community and to turn it into a gastropub.  But London Central Employment tribunal clearly disagreed, and found it guilty of discriminatory treatment.

We think these words would usually strike fear in your boyfreind/girlfriend, yes?  Well that is until you tell them that she’s in a Burlesque show and will probably be wearing a teeny tiny outfit (and so will Marilyn Monroe, Doris Day and Audrey Hepburn).

Valentine’s is all about nice underwear – and we expect you’ll see quite a lot here.   “Time for Tease”  will also be serving a special hearts and flowers themed afternoon tea at The Pigalle Club in Picadilly,  London town.   And since it’s the day before Valentines day, you can avoid all those annoying “get a room” couples and stay in on Valentine’s day watching Doctor who with a Chinese takeaway.

We at BWT love 50’s vintage, and Vivien of Holloway make the perfect replica 50’s dresses without the “vintage smell” or cigarette burn hole on the bum.

This week from Thursday to Sunday (28th – 31st January) they will be having a sale event with many things at half price, which means that you cab buy two!

The only snag is, the sale is restricted to their London store only, and not online.   Sorry folks!  But if you are in the London area or fancy an outing, you could do a lot worse than popping down to their store on Holloway Road.  To check out their stock and more information about the sale, please click here.
