A South Korean couple have gone on trial charged with allowing their baby daughter to starve to death while they played an online computer game.

Prosecutors said they fed the baby once a day and left her alone for hours while they visited internet cafes.

In a tragic twist, the couple were going to the cafes to interact with a VIRTUAL child – named Anima – in a role-playing game called Prius Online (pictured, above.)

The game enables players to interact with Anima and as they do so, help her to recover her lost memory and develop emotions.

Last month, a police officer told the Yonhap news agency the couple appeared to have “lost their will to live a normal life”.

Such a desperately sad story…

Hangover-Free Alcohol? March 8, 2010

Imagine what it would be like to never have a hangover after a night on the lash.  Go on.  Picture it.  Sounds pretty cool, doesn’t it?  And it could soon be a reality, thanks to a discovery by researchers from South Korea.

The body uses oxygen to metabolise alcohol. The researchers at Chungnam National University found that when they infused high amounts of oxygen into a person’s alcoholic drink, their blood alcohol concentration fell to zero much faster than would normally be expected.

Unfortunately this approach wouldn’t eliminate your hangover entirely, and it’s unlikely to make much of a dent on a ten-pint binge. But, you sober up more up more quickly, and reduce the length of your hangover.

However, as BBC Focus points out, there is a danger to this discovery.  Even if the strength of your hangover is decreased, it doesn’t mean the same for your liver.  If booze carried no penalty, would alcohol abuse rise even higher?
