Yumchaa = YUM! April 6, 2010

BWT loves tea, oh yes.

One of our favourite tea shops has been quietly growing and spreading its little tea leaves all over London.  Yum!

We like Yumchaa because it has far too many teas to choose from, delicious cakes, and guides us away from the “other” more “corporate” coffee shops who shall not be named.  We also like the decor because we’re shallow like that.

You’ll probably find us sniffing the sample cups.  Mmm, Midnight Grey please!

For those outside the haven of tea and cakes, you can find them online here.

Supermarket Waitrose is in exclusive talks to buy sandwich bar and coffee chain EAT, The Sunday Times reported – without citing sources.

The supermarket, which is owned by department stores group John Lewis , had been given a month to finalise a deal, with a price tag on the chain of about 100 million pounds, the report said.

EAT, which was founded 13 years ago by Niall and Faith MacArthur, has 100 branches selling sandwiches, soups, pies and drinks.

Waitrose was thought to be planning to open EAT cafes inside its supermarkets and to sell Waitrose food in EAT stores, The Sunday Times said.

Waitrose declined to comment on the report, while EAT was not immediately available for comment.

Guess we’ll find out either way pretty soon, eh?

Eat Chocolate, Stay Healthy! March 25, 2010

May we just say, we’re LOVING the sound of this.

An East Lancashire businessman believes he can help people to stay healthy – by eating chocolate!

Gary Bailey is the man behind Choco-Vit, a ‘superfood’ packed with antioxidants, vitamins and essential minerals.

The 48-year-old claims his combination of dark chocolate and acai berry, which contains 27 calories per piece, can be used as an aid to healthy eating, weight loss and mood enhancement.

Priced at £14.99 a box, acai choc (the first product in the Choco-Vit range) contains 30 squares of chocolate, each of which contains 500mg of acai berry, a superfruit from Brazil rich in omega three, six and nine, 19 different amino acids, plus vitamins B1, B2, B3, C and E and minerals including potassium, calcium, copper, magnesium and zinc.

Bailey said: “This is a superfood that uses chocolate as a means of delivering all the vitamins, essential minerals and anti-oxidants that health conscious individuals should take every day.”

We’re health conscious!  We’re health conscious!  VERY health conscious.  Which means we would need to eat at least five bars a day.  Because, y’know, we’re that dedicated to being healthy.

We suppose we should mention that some stupid dietician person from some stupid Primary Care Trust called the product an impractical marketing gimmick, but WHAT DOES SHE KNOW?  … Okay, quite a lot.  But still!

Don’t shatter our dreams!

The Perfect Gift For Easter? March 24, 2010

Looking to be a bit alternative this Easter?  You couldn’t go far wrong popping down to Waitrose, where you can buy your very own ostrich egg for the princely sum of £18.99.

Apparently they taste just likes a chicken’s egg, except they take around ten times longer to boil.

We think we’ll stick with our usual from Thornton’s, thanks.  We can’t imagine it would be too easy to write out someone’s name in icing on an ostrich egg, either.

FACT OF THE DAY: Ostriches don’t need to drink.  They’re able to create water internally and top it up with what they can extract from vegetation.

Horse meat is being served in a British restaurant for the first time at Edinburgh’s L’Escargot Bleu.

The restaurant is offering diners a choice of pan-fried rump steak or steak tartare – and its boss says the meat is delicious.

Fred Berkmiller, the head of L’Escargot Bleu in Edinburgh, said: ‘It is tender, sweet, less fatty than beef, and contains higher levels of iron and omega 3.’

He added: ‘Each time I go home to Tours, my father makes me horse steak tartare. I want my Scottish customers to taste it.’

About 70,000 horses are consumed in France each year. In 2005 – the latest year for which figures are available – about 4.7 million were consumed globally.

What do you think, BWT readers?  Would you eat horse meat?  Is it really any different to, say, eating pork?

Okay, here’s the bad news:

The wine you’re drinking could be radioactive.

But here’s the good news:

It could be used to detect whether you’re being ripped off by dodgy wine dealers.

Harmless amounts of radioactive carbon have been found in wines made from grapes harvested since the last atmospheric atomic bomb tests were carried out in the 1960s.

This carbon allows scientists to pinpoint a wine’s vintage to within a year by analysing its levels within the wine, a technique they say could help detect fraudulent attempts to repackage cheap plonk as a high-end tipple.

Some experts claim that around 5% of fine wines currently being sold are faked, either by being diluted with cheaper wines or sold under false labels.

It all sounds pretty freaky to us.  Talk about finding a silver lining!  Ah well, it gives us an excuse to drink more Jack Daniels…

How To Make Crisps In The Microwave March 18, 2010

We use our microwave to cook lots of different types of food.  But CRISPS?  That is something we hadn’t even considered.

Clearly someone had, because savourysweetlife.com has put together a guide to help you do just that.  So if you’ve got time on your hands and are feeling particularly domestic, why not give it a try?

Ingredients:

1 russet potato
Non stick spray
Parchment paper or glass plate
Salt and Pepper

Step-by-Step:

1) Cut a piece of parchment paper to fit the inside of your microwave.  You can also use a glass plate.

2) Carefully slice 1/3 of a potato into paper thin slices using a mandoline. You don’t want to cut any more than this because any extra slices laying around waiting to be cooked will turn pink in color.

3) Completely coat the parchment paper or glass plate with non-stick spray or vegetable oil, and place the potato slices in a single layer.

4) Spray the potato slices with non stick spray/vegetable oil and lightly sprinkle with salt and pepper.

5) Turn off the rotating option on your microwave and cook for 4-5 minutes. Cooking times will vary based on the strength and power of your microwave. Some crisps may turn very dark brown. Ideally you want them light and golden.

6) Repeat the process until you’ve used your entire potato. Enjoy!

… The mind boggles!
