Mention the term ‘hedge fund trader’ and everybody bristles.

Greedy.  Immoral.  Money-grubbing gits.

But did you know that a certain hedge fund trader has also been rated as the most generous, charity-giving person in Britain?

Step forward Christopher Coopher-Hohn.

This guy has topped the Giving List for the last three years running – and with good reason.  He’s donated a whopping £531.2 million to the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation, the charity he and his wife help run.  That means he’s donated more than six times his personal wealth to a good cause!

The news comes around as The Sunday Times reveals its Top 10 Most Generous Britains.

The paper ranks the rich on the proportion of their total wealth given to charitable causes in one year, rather than looking solely at the size of donation.  And it’s packed with surprises!

Did you know that the guy behind Kwik Save, Albert Gubay, has donated 470m to charity?

Did you also know that Uma Thurman and her husband Arpad Busson are fifth in the list, having given £65.1 million to helping poor and abused children?

The list in full is as follows:

  1. Christopher Cooper-Hohn
  2. Albert Gubay
  3. Bart Becht
  4. Anurag Dikshit
  5. Arpad Busson & Uma Thurman
  6. Lord Sainsbury
  7. Johan Eliasch
  8. Sir Terence Conran
  9. Sir Elton John
  10. Bob Edmiston

Good going, guys!  Keep up the good work!

Promiscuous Women Cause Earthquakes April 21, 2010

WOMEN.  They hog the bathroom, own too many pairs of shoes, and keep the cushion industry churning along.

Now they’re responsible for earthquakes, too!

Tens of thousands of people have died in Iran earthquakes in the last decade.

Hojatoleslam Kazem Sedighi, a senior Iranian cleric, says promiscuous women should shoulder some of the blame.

“Many women who do not dress modestly lead young men astray and spread adultery in society which increases earthquakes,” he said.

Mr Sedighi was delivering a sermon on the need for a “general repentance” by Iranians.

“What can we do to avoid being buried under the rubble? There is no other solution but to take refuge in religion and to adapt our lives to Islam’s moral codes,” he said.

I wonder what his thoughts are on who caused Iceland’s volcano to erupt?  Our bet’s on people who litter.

A mother of three from Delhi is reported to have thrown herself under a train after learning that her children had failed their school exams.

Anjana, 32, went to collect their report cards on Saturday morning.  When she did not return home, a search was launched.  Eventually her body was found on a railway track, clutching a bag containing the three report cards – detailing that all of her children had failed.

A family member said Anjana had told her eldest son that she would not return home if the results were not up to her expectations.

Parents at the school said this was another tragic case of high expectations not being fulfilled in this highly competitive world.

Training Cuts Student Medics ‘Anti-Fat’ Prejudice April 16, 2010

Students training to enter the health service need better teaching in order to prevent discrimination against obese patients, a study suggests.

Researchers said previous work had found high levels of “anti-fat prejudice” among health professionals.

But a trial of 159 students, reported in the Obesity journal, found this prejudice could easily be lowered with appropriate teaching about the effect of genes and the environment on obesity.

Over the past decade, prejudice among the public towards overweight people has increased by 66%, the international team of researchers said.

Some studies have shown that among those working in the health professions, including doctors and nurses, the rate of prejudice is even higher than in the general population.

Study leader Dr Kerry O’Brien, a lecturer at the University of Manchester, said being taught solely about diet and exercise implied that obese people were just lazy and gluttonous, but to a large extent weight status is inherited and health professionals needed to be aware of other influences.

He said “blaming the individual” was not always obvious but could mean doctors or nurses spent less time with obese patients or did not take their problems as seriously.

“The key is not to be stigmatising these patients.

“Making people feel bad about their condition is not going to help.”

Poor Iceland.  They’ve been hit by earthquakes, volcano eruptions, and evacuations.   River levels are rapidly rising, with risk of flash floods.

Sure, the eruptions have caused chaos with air passengers due to the volcanic ash spreading across the sky.  But it’s not their fault, is it?

Apparently not…

Videogames And Cartoons Used To Shock School Children About Violence April 12, 2010

18-rated videogame ‘Grand Theft Auto’ and gory cartoon ‘The Itchy And Scratchy Show’ are both being used to demonstrate the difference between real and virtual violence to primary school children in Merseyside.

Children are shown stills of scenes including a gun being fired through a car window and a man brandishing a sword, and then asked to categorise them as ‘good real life’, ‘bad real life’ and ‘not real.’

The idea behind it is to stop children becoming desensitized to violent behavior and teach them about its consequences in real life.

What do you think, BWT readers?  Is this scheme a brilliant idea, or a waste of time and money?

A 13-year-old Yemeni girl has died of internal bleeding three days after being married, rights groups say.

The report comes amid ongoing debate on setting a minimum age for brides in Yemen, where more than a quarter of girls are married before the age of 15.

A 2009 law setting the minimum age at 17 was repealed after some lawmakers said it was un-Islamic. A final decision is due this month.

There was no official confirmation of the death by Yemeni officials.

The girl, said to have been married to a man in his 20s, died in the west of the country last week, the Arab Sisters Forum (Saf) rights group said.

A medical report by the hospital where she was treated said she had suffered a tear to her genitals and severe bleeding after intercourse, the group said.

Disgusting…

Gordon Brown has just announced that the UK general election will be held on the 6th May.

It’s set to be a close competition this time, with opinion polls suggesting that there might even be a hung Parliament (the BBC has an awesome little 1-minute slide show HERE, describing what that means.)

So EVERY VOTE COUNTS!

A South Korean couple have gone on trial charged with allowing their baby daughter to starve to death while they played an online computer game.

Prosecutors said they fed the baby once a day and left her alone for hours while they visited internet cafes.

In a tragic twist, the couple were going to the cafes to interact with a VIRTUAL child – named Anima – in a role-playing game called Prius Online (pictured, above.)

The game enables players to interact with Anima and as they do so, help her to recover her lost memory and develop emotions.

Last month, a police officer told the Yonhap news agency the couple appeared to have “lost their will to live a normal life”.

Such a desperately sad story…

Air Pollution Shortens Lives by Nine Years March 29, 2010

Serious YIKES!

The House of Commons’ Environmental Audit Committee has just released findings that people living in air pollution ‘hotspots’ could find their average life expectancy shortened by NINE YEARS.

Tiny particles of sulphate, carbon and dust are the most damaging to health, but nitrogen oxides and ozone also have an effect. The UK is in breach of European regulations for all of these, and could face fines of up to £300 million. Road transport is the main culprit. Power plants also churn out damaging particles but mostly away from cities.

Only a radical shift in transport policy will allow the UK to meet its targets, the report concludes. “But such a shift is unlikely to occur in the next 10 years, unless the government starts taking sustainable transport seriously,” says Paul Firmin of the Institute for Transport Studies at the University of Leeds, UK.
